Research operations
The research operational plan (ROP) program UCLA launched with the move to Phase 2 of the ramp-up plan is no longer required for research and creative activities on campus or in the field.
Principal investigators can now utilize as many researchers — including staff, postdoctoral students, graduate and undergraduate students, high school students, volunteers and visiting scholars — as they deem necessary, as long as they continue to comply with all mandates from the Centers for Disease Control, the Californian Department of Public Health, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA).
While many of the restrictions for research activities, travel, field work, and community-based activities have been lifted, it remains critical that individuals participating in research on campus continue to follow the public health mitigations that remain in effect, including wearing face masks, completing the required symptom monitoring survey each day they will be on campus, verifying their vaccination status, and participating in COVID-19 testing if required. It is the responsibility of each PI to ensure that their activities are in compliance with these health and safety requirements and that they have articulated safety plans with all personnel on their team.
All new research and creative activities personnel starting in the fall (faculty, staff and students) should familiarize themselves with and follow the safety protocols in a laboratory, studio, library or performance space. COVID research
Under UCLA Policy 992, any research group that plans to conduct research with SARS-CoV-2 must obtain Institutional Biosafety Committee approval prior to beginning any such research. As part of the IBC review process, a full risk assessment would be conducted to ensure worker safety and agent containment.
Students and research
With the ROP program no longer required for research and creative activities on campus or in the field, personnel density limits and previous restrictions placed on undergraduate student researchers have been lifted.
